Say cheers in Bengaluru!

Bengaluru is the beer capital of India. It’s tryst with pubs and beer drinking dates back to 1857 when the Scotsman, Thomas Leishman founded its first brewery here. United Breweries set up operations in then Bangalore in 1915. Hence there is strong connection between beer and Bengaluru.......

Bangalore or Bengaluru is known as the IT destination of India. But there is something else that puts it in the tippler’s list. There is a close connection between beer and Bengaluru. For crisp, freshly-brewed, affordable beer, Bengaluru is the place to be. Here you find crowds, especially young, casually unwinding after-work. Some simulating their creativity with a mug in hand and whiling away sunny afternoons with friends at the city’s many microbreweries.

Bengaluru is the beer capital of India. It’s tryst with pubs and beer drinking dates back to 1857 when the Scotsman, Thomas Leishman founded its first brewery here. United Breweries set up operations in then Bangalore in 1915.

Ramada Pub was the first place, where draught beer from a tap was sold, opened in 1985. It was followed by a branch in Chamarajpet and The Pub, later to become Nasa on Church street. UB first made bulk beer for British troops in the city with beer transported in huge barrels or hogsheads. It’s most profitable brand Kingfisher was introduced in the 1960’s, which has made a favorite name among st the beer drinkers.

1.16 crore cases of beer was sold in 2014-15 in Bengaluru city. Beer’s popularity was such that in April 2011, Karnataka raised the tax on spirits while leaving the tax on beer untouched – the first time there were different tax rates on different alcoholic beverages. But the good times did not last for long.

The city hosts beer guzzling contests and beer walks. Like Iceland that has a day dedicated to beer: March 1. It marks the celebration of the end of 73 years of prohibition in the country. The high-spirited Icelanders don’t stop at that. Verslunarmannahelgi in August is observed as the drunkest weekend of the year.

Bengaluru too raises a toast to Munich’s Oktoberfest with its own jamborees. Now all it needs is hangover beds and extra pants. In Munich, it’s okay if you sleep after bingeing. To keep festival attendees safe, hangover beds are set up at one tent for them to doze until the booze wears off.

Any one visiting Bengaluru and not tasting the beer is missing something unique to Bengaluru. Whenever in Bangalore, its beer time!

For all the Whisky Lovers!

Glenfiddich is the world's best-selling single malt

Johnnie Walker Red Label is the world's best-selling Scotch.

The Famous Grouse is the best-selling whisky in Scotland

Glenmorangie is the best-selling single malt in Scotland.

The world's fastest growing Scotch today is Black Dog. India is a major contributor to its sales.

The five most popular single malts globally are Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Glenmorangie Original, Aberlour and Laphroaig

Bruichladdich’s The Octomore is the most heavily peated whisky in the world (167ppm)

The three oldest single malts currently sold are Glenturret, Oban and Glenlivet

The oldest distillery in Scotland is Glenturret (1775), followed by Bowmore (1779)

With each bottle of Laphroaig that you buy, you are entitled to a lifetime lease of one sq foot of the distillery’s land, along with a personalized certificate of ownership

Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop on Canongate, has a unique selling point: customers can have a bottle poured straight from a cask and labeled with their name. When sealed it has a label with the ‘born on date’, as whisky stops aging as soon as it leaves the wooden barrel, so each bottle is a unique blend.

Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland. The entire operation is run by just three people

The Glenmorangie distillery is one of the smallest in the Highlands and employs just sixteen craftsmen, called ‘The Sixteen Men of Tain’

The most expensive country in which to buy Scotch, ironically, is the UK, where it is made

In the UK, its home country, the five most popular blended Scotch whiskies are The Famous Grouse, William Grant’s, Bell’s, Teacher’s and J&B Rare. Note: Johnnie Walker does not feature in the list of best-selling blends in its home country.

A closed bottle of Scotch can be kept for 100 years and still be good to drink. After opening, a bottle of Scotch whisky will remain good for five years.

The Australian Wine Research Institute has introduced a measure called a standard drink. In Australia, a standard drink contains 10 g (12.67 ml) of alcohol, the amount that an average adult male can metabolize in one hour.

Although their proof differs, standard drinks of beer, wine and spirits contain the same amount of alcohol – 0.6 ounces each. They’re all the same to a breath analyser.

18,000 litres of Scotch whisky worth over $800,000 were accidentally flushed down the drain at Chivas Brothers’ Dumbarton bottling plant in 2013.

Experts advise you to drink single malt with just a dash of water. The water supposedly ‘releases the serpent’ from the whisky

If there is a serpent, there is also an angel. As it ages, 2-2.5 % of the whisky maturing in a barrel is lost to evaporation every year. Distillers refer to this as the ‘angel’s share’.

There is also a devil. The whisky absorbed by the wood of barrel during maturation is known as the 'devil's cut’

Indian 'whisky' is technically flavoured rum, because it's essentially made from sugar

Making history!

Pluto is the furtherest and the smallest planet in the solar system. Not much is known about it. NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft will soon fly-by this planet for the first time. With the pictures and data collected, we will come to know a lot about this planet.....

In almost seven days time, NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft will fly by Dwarf planet Pluto for the first time ever. 85 years ago Pluto was discovered by astronomer Clyde W Tombaugh.

In 2006, Pluto lost its planet tag, after the International Astronomical Union said it was too small to dominate its orbits neighborhood.

It is 2,350 km wide Pluto is smaller than Earth’s moon. 12,552 km from Pluto’s surface is the closest New Horizons will reach during fly-by. The first contact with earth will be four hours after fly-by. The first photograph will be sent the next day. Because of the sheer volume of the data, it will take a year-and-a-half for all information collected to be radioed back to Earth.

On July 4, an anomaly sent the spacecraft into safe mode. An investigation said, it was caused by an overload of the main computer. Spacecraft was restored to full operation on Tuesday, July 7.

Now it is about six million miles away or 25 times the distance from Earth to the Moon as on July 7. On board is Clyde W Tombaugh’s ashes, a CD-Rom with 4,34,000 names of people who responded to a – Send Your Name to Pluto request, along with coins from Maryland, where the spacecraft was built, and Florida from where it took off.

With the pictures and data transmitted to Earth, we will know more about this small and furtherest planet in the solar system. At present very little is known about it. ‘It’s very exciting to think that the dwarf planets could have astrobiological potential,’ says New Horizons lead scientist Alan Stern of the Southwest research Institute.

The book explores issues between siblings after their father’s death. It is a turning point episode in Ramayana that makes it very important. The book has simple verse which is exemplary writing. This makes it a great read. I recommend it those interested to know more about Indian mythology and tradition.
