Penalty FIFA & Red Card

It’s a World Cup of fraud. Fifa is trapped in deep rooted corruption charges. $150 million (Rs 959 crore) paid in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for favours. Swiss police arrested seven senior Fifa officials in a raid in Zurich. The action came ahead of Sepp Blatter’s re-election as president.....

This is a World Cup of fraud. The seven officials who have been indicted for allegedly taking huge bribes to grant favours are: Jeffery Webb, Fifa vice-president, Eugenio Figueredo, Fifa vice-president, Jack Warner, Ex-Fifa vice-president, Rafael Esquivel, South America EC member, Eduardo Li, Fifa EC member, Jose Maria Marin, Olympic Games Incharge and Nicolas Leoz.

Two Fifa vice-presidents were among seven people arrested at a luxury Zurich hotel. They face deportation to the US on the charges of accepting more than $150 million in bribes, allegedly paid by US and South American sports marketing executives to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international tournaments. The two Fifa vice-presidents are Jeffery Webb, from Cayman Islands, and Eugenio Figueredo from Uruguay.

‘To date, more than $151 million (in kickbacks and bribes) has been identified. We exposed complex money laundering schemes and discovered tens of millions of dollars hidden away in offshore accounts. This is the World Cup of fraud and today we are issuing a Fifa a red card,’ Richard Weber, Chief, US Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation.

The US, which has launched a corruption probe, said nine football officials among fourteen face up to 20 years in jail if found guilty. And Swiss authorities opened criminal proceedings over mismanagement and money laundering related to the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Swiss police raided the Fifa headquarters in Zurich and FBI searched the Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) headquarters in Miami.

The 2010 Fifa vote for Cup venues has been surrounded by widespread allegations of fraud, although Fifa has rejected calls to change the venues. The 2022 World Cup has been the subject of hot controversy from the moment Qatar was given the nod by Fifa in 2010 to host the event, with nine Fifa officials arrested on Wednesday, 27 May, police raids in Zurich and Miami over corruption charges. ‘The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep rooted, both abroad and here in the United States,’ said attorney-general Loretta Lynch.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is a master of getting out from tight corners and he has every intention of pulling off another great escape by sealing a fifth term as the president. Will Sepp Blatter still be elected as Fifa president? Could Qatar or Russia be stripped of the World Cup?

‘A good memoir – should have elegant prose peppered with a little wit and humour. It should not be pompous, otherwise tends to get a bit vulgar. It should be based on real life experiences and facts. Should be economic in words and focus on the essentials for the benefit of young readers.’
