Make in India is a major government initiative launched in 2014 to transform India into a global manufacturing, design, and innovation hub. It aims to boost the economy by encouraging both domestic and foreign companies to manufacture their products within the country. The initiative focuses on 25 core sectors, creating millions of jobs, and upgrading the nation’s infrastructure and skill base. The main push being creating new jobs and becoming a global manufacturing hub.

India set an ambitious goal, with promises to become a global manufacturing hub, attract investment, boost exports and create jobs. 12 years later, what has changed? Has the promise been fulfilled? 12 years later, the facts and figures tell a different story. The data paints a mixed picture. Manufacturing, exports, private investment, FDI, PLI and jobs, see what has actually changed.

Has private investment increased since - Make in India? Privat-sector Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) will open your eyes. 2014-15 – 23.1%, 2022-23 – 24.6% and 2023-24 – 22.8% (Source: Economic Survey 2025-26, Statistical Appendix, Table1.9, NSO). (NB: Private sector includes household sector).

Make in India – A bigger player in Global Supply Chains? Merchandise Exports have increased since 2014, $253 billion in 2014 to $388 billion in 2025-26. India’s share in Global Merchandise Exports – Despite higher exports, India’s share in global goods exports has increased only marginally. +0.11 percentage point. 1.70% in 2014 to 1.81% in 2024. Exports have grown, but India’s share in global merchandise exports has not seen a dramatic expansion. (Source: Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt of India. Did it create 10 crore jobs? 5.1 crore Manufacturing employment in 2016-17. Government target was 10 crore, additional manufacturing jobs by 2022. And 5.3 crore manufacturing employment in 2025-26. Net increase: +0.2 crore.

Did Make in India achieve its 25% target? 18.1% Manufacturing share of GDP in 2011-12, Target by 2022, 25% of GDP. And in 2024-25, 17.2% Manufacturing share of GDP. (Source: MoSPL, National Accounts Statistics (2011-12 base year series)

12 years of Make in India: PLI drives ₹2.58 lakh crore investment, ₹15.53 lakh crore exports; CII calls for deeper manufacturing

The evolution marks a shift in how India is positioning itself in the global economy. While the size of the domestic market remains a major attraction for companies, CII said manufacturing competitiveness will increasingly depend on India’s ability to combine market scale with technology, talent, infrastructure and capital.

“A large market attracts businesses. A competitive production base creates businesses. A country that can combine both, while developing technology, talent, infrastructure and capital, can shape global value chains,” said R Mukundan, president, CII and managing director & CEO, Tata Chemicals.

Isro's GSLV successfully places NVS-03

satellite into 'designated' orbit

On Friday, the 50-metre-tall GSLV rocket carrying NVS-03 lifted off at the scheduled time of 11.51 pm from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, following a 24-hour countdown. After a flight of about 18 minutes, which saw the successful performance of all three stages including the complex cryogenic upper stage, the primary payload got separated from the launch vehicle and was injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

In his address following the success of the crucial mission, Narayanan said already three satellites, including NVS-01 are successfully working and now, NVS-03 has restored Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services.

The GSLV mission placed the second-generation navigation satellite into its designated orbit, restoring NavIC to 4 operational satellites and strengthening India's indigenous navigation

India's independent regional navigation satellite system NavIC was restored to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites on Friday as Isro successfully launched its navigation satellite NVS-03, which was placed into the designated injection orbit by a GSLV rocket.

The second-generation navigation satellite NVS-03 with indigenous and procured atomic clocks has a wide array of applications including civilian use like real time tracking of trains, vehicles, and shipping vessels. Further, the NavIC constellation is an important component of the 'one nation, one time' project, Isro chief V Narayanan said after the successful mission launch.

The NVS-03 satellite is all set to complement three other navigational satellites in operation including the NVS-01 and it will strengthen infrastructure for a robust IST with the government recently notifying the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026. The nation's own satellite navigation system 'NaVIC,' is the Indian version of GPS, albeit confined to the country and 1,500 km beyond.
