Most parents don’t plan or bother of whatever assets they have, and suddenly they are gone. Since nothing has been put on record, children wouldn’t be aware of the assets and would have to check all over the house. It’s a very tricky situation as you don’t know what your parents have left behind after their lifelong hard work which rightfully should go to their children.
Leaving a clear, organized financial roadmap is one of the most profound parting gifts a parent can give their children. Picture this – when a loved one passes, relatives and children in grief is heavy enough; trying to piece together a fragmented financial puzzle only adds unnecessary stress and anxiety. When the actual time comes, children shouldn’t have to become detectives to find what you accumulated over a lifetime.
Whether they live down the street or settled in a different city or abroad, having a single comprehensive record of your financial footprint and other assets brings immense peace of mind to everyone involved. Here is a step-by-step guide to what this file needs to contain and how to set it up securely.
Banking and Fixed Deposits (FDs)
Liquid cash and secure
investments are often the immediate resources a family needs to access.
List every bank account
(Savings & Current) with the bank’s name, branch, account numbers, and the
names of joint-holders.
Fixed Deposits: Document the FD receipt numbers, maturity dates, amount, and where the physical or digital certificates are stored.
Explicitly state the nominee
details for each account. Ensure your accounts are operating under Either or
Survivor or Former or Survivor mandates to make the transitions smooth.
Real Estate & Immovable Property
Property matters can involve
significant administrative paperwork, especially if titles need to be
transferred later.
List all properties (residential, commercial or agricultural land) with their exact addresses.
The Paper trail: Note the
location of original registered sale deeds, property tax receipts, share
certificates (if part of a housing society), and home loan closure certificates
(if applicable).
Contacts: Provide the contact
info of a trusted local lawyer or society secretary who understands the
property’s history.
The Digital Wealth: Shares & Mutual Funds
Because most investments are
now digitized through demat accounts, they can easily become invisible if a
laptop or phone password isn’t known.
Write down the name of the
Depository Participant (DP) like NSDL or CDSL, the broker’s name (like Zerodha,
ICICI Direct, Money Control), and the Demat account number.
Mutual Funds: List the fund houses, Folio numbers, and whether they are held via a platform or directly. You don’t need to update the exact daily balance – just show where the money is.
Nomination: Ensure that
online demat account has updated nominee details.
Alternate Income sources & Insurance
Don’t forget the steady
streams of income or protective policies that might be still active.
Life & Health Insurance:
List the policy numbers, insurer names, sum assured, and contact numbers of the
insurance agents.
The Handover Conversation
Do not keep the file a
complete secret. Tell your children where the physical binder is kept in the
house or how to access the digital backup in an emergency.
Digital safety: Never write
down your active net banking login passwords or transaction PINS in the same
file as your account numbers. Keep the asset record as a map of locations, not
an open vault!
Taking a free time or a weekend to organize this information is a powerful act of love. It ensures that the transition of your hard-earned legacy is defined by clarity, dignity and ease.

What is Gen Z?
In simple terms Gen Z is the new generation of Indians. Generation Z, often shortened to Gen Z and informally known as Zoomers, is the demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. They are not aware of the past and are not concerned of whatever happened earlier. They live in the present and expect a better life and progress.
Never underestimate the power of Gen Z, said the leaders around the world who have faced the wrath of Gen Z. They are cool, aloof and busy with their work and study, but if somebody enters to disturb their space or create a problem, they can react swiftly and effectively. Most important they are fearless of leaders and authorities nor they are concerned of a person’s stature. Nothing can stop them. They can only be convinced with sense and logic. They love their country. They will do what is right and are sincere to their cause. And once their purpose is achieved, they celebrate in their own way.
They are modern, young, educated, smart, extremely good on social media and most of them are proficient in IT, know how to use it. They are familiar with world affairs and local affairs than most of the politicians. Most of them are good at English language know how to respond and spread word around locally and in foreign countries too. Language is not an impediment. They, have their own lingo, dress sense and style of functioning and messaging. They take criticisms and react in their own humorous way. They are excellent at communication.
The Boomers, Gen X and millennials generation find it difficult understand their behavior, approach to things. This is due to the generation gap. Spending time with them gives you an idea of how they think, their approach to problems, the solutions and remember they are smart and know more as they are exposed to the world through internet. Even leaders and politicians may find it tough to debate with them. They can come with practical solution to the problems.
