A unique way of promotion where the manufacturers are happy, models are happy and customers are happy too. Bound to get a lot of attention. Hopefully business is brisk!

After boob advertising, now we have walking billboards. Good ads normally should be where people are looking. It is a country known for its unique way of advertising. But now Japan has gone one step further with women renting out their bare legs for companies to market their products in return for payment.

Women in Japan have become moving billboards. Japanese women rent their legs to advertise, giving a new meaning to advertising. After a PR company started placing adverts on its models shapely bare legs and actually launching print ad campaigns. Public Relations Consultant, Hidenori Atsumi, spotted the potential in body advertisement. Japanese advertisers are banking on it, offering women money in exchange for the use of their thighs. Participants paste temporary tattoos of brand logos on their legs and spend the day exposing them to oglers. As of November 2012, about 1,300 girls have already registered their legs as ad space with Absolute Territory PR, and the number keeps increasing. According to Eichi Atsumi - a spokesperson at the company running the service - the only guidelines that have to be met to get the job are that the registered person is connected to at least more than 20 people on some social network and that they are over 18 years old.

The new style of promotion involves a woman who walks around the city for eight hours each day with the images painted on the thighs or wearing the advert, which comes in the form of a temporary adhesive. The models are encouraged to dress up in mini-skirts and long socks so they can look more attractive while carrying around advertisements. Shapely legs automatically attract attention of young and old people; thereby an increasing number of eyeballs everyday! Women can expect to earn between $13 and $128 for one day’s work. One can assume this marketing strategy would work particularly well for products or services geared to a male audience. And sure enough, the clever marketing strategy is proving a huge hit with businesses all across Tokyo. And it's just not companies who are getting in on the act as rock band Green Day recently employed the service to promote the Japan release of their new CD, !Uno!

A unique way of promotion where the manufacturers are happy, models are happy and customers are happy too. A win-win situation for all those who are involved, and a happy one at that. From boobs to legs; where will it end? Though it could be classified as a blatant objectification of the female body, PR’s crafty campaign is a glimpse into the future of advertising. What next!

Rajnath Singh’s faux pas – Round 2

After Rajnath Singh, now it’s the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s turn to shoot. He said – it is an ‘illusion’ that English is the only means of progress. When will these leaders stop English bashing? Are they trying to woo the Hindi belt? The world must be laughing at their ignorance.

It appears the BJP leaders are confused. Once they talk of progressive ideas and development; and that India take the rightful place on the world stage. They seem to take one step forward then take two steps backward. That’s the irony of the party claiming to be the alternative to the Congress. If they are aiming to form the next government in 2014, they should be clear in their vision, thinking and speaking. They should not speak in different voices of appeasement and hurting the sentiments of others. Or else they will take us back with their old alleged label – ‘Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan’. They should be inclusive in their thinking rather than exclusive.

With such erratic statements from BJP chief Rajnath Singh and BJP election committee chief N Modi, BJP is making it easy for the Congress and helping them in their effort in the coming elections. Do they want to offer them another victory on the platter?

For most Indians, English is an additional skill apart from their mother-tongues. English is seen to have helped India to connect with the world and given it a big share of the BPO and IT business which provides employment to lakhs of young educated Indians and also laks of Indians working abroad. Beside by learning English, people don’t loose their cultural roots or traditional foundations. For many educated Indians, English is an additional language. Knowing English will only help Indians to advance and develop further.

China too has made English compulsory in primary schools, and statics predict that they will add about 20 million English speakers each year. This will give the Chinese advantage over Indians. Even the authorities there have expressed that lack of English had hampered their growth at a faster rate.

Rajnath Singh and others trying to appease the Hindi belt and accusing English language for all the ills, is doing a great disservice to millions of Indians who use English as a means of communication in the country and abroad. If this campaign continues, it will do more harm than good to the BJP. As I have been saying earlier, BJP leaders are bent on scoring self-goals!

What are the Chinese up to?

The Chinese are at it again, smashed sheds and grabbed cameras. The Chinese army entered Ladakh yet again and raided an Indian post. The Chumar post on the Ladakh-HP border was the bone of contention even during the 21-day military face-off in April-May, which saw two rival armies pitching tents and indulging in banner drills after PLA troops intruded 19km into the Indian territory in the Depsang Bulge of the Daulat Beg Oldi sector. Though Chumar is about 250km south of DBO, Indian observation posts and surveillance cameras there have long irked the PLA since they can look into the Chinese territory and track troop movements. They continue to target it with some excuse or the other. It is high time India responds adequately and sends a strong message to the Chinese, enough is enough.

The PLA continues to needle Indian forces all along the Line of Actual Control – from Arunachal Pradesh to Ladakh despite the good atmosphere generated during the recent visits of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to India and Defence Minister AK Anthony to Beijing. It has become a pattern, whenever a Chinese or Indian dignitary or senior official is about to visit Delhi or Beijing, there is a definite planned intrusion into Indian territory with the excuse of perception, violating the understanding between the two countries. This is done with an idea of putting pressure on India to agree to Beijing’s point of view on the disputed territory. Or they are still perturbed by the asylum granted to Tibetans, since the sixties, when China annexed Tibet, and Dalai Lama enjoying free speech and travel in India and abroad.

It has been assumed that over-zealous local Chinese commanders are responsible for these intrusions. Given the way the Chinese government and army function, it is certain, there is a nod from the top and has a set pattern. In the recent intrusion in South-eastern Ladakh, a PLA patrol crossed over into Indian territory in the crucial Chumar post area and took away an Indian surveillance camera after dismantling it on June 17. The video camera was returned only on July 3 after Army-ITBP team lodged a strong protest during a flag meeting at Spanggur Gap in Chushul sector on June 19. There was no confrontation or any face-off. Incidentally, India has recorded well over 600 ‘transgressions’ by PLA troops across the LAC in the last three years. Indian troops also aggressively patrol the LAC. India is belatedly trying to counter the Chinese major military infrastructure levels along the LAC for over the couple of decades.

India has to take adequate measures to curtail the Chinese needling from time to time. India is contemplating a proposal to patrol deeper into the disputed territory, beyond the limits observed before the April stand-off.

If India and China, the two Asian giants are to be major economic powers, they need to co-operate and respect each other, rather than create acrimony. A peaceful atmosphere can encourage and create wonders for both the countries and its vast population. The world is now looking at Asia.

Does your Beverage have Carcinogens?

Give a thought before you buy beverages and gulp it down your throat. It is a known fact that beverages are bad for health. But did you know it is harmful and much more than you ever imagined it to be. A recent report said – ‘Pepsi products still have carcinogens.’  Many people were stunned by this report. Can this happen to a product of a multi-national company?

Watchdog group The Center for Environmental Health found via testing that while Coke products no longer test positive for the chemical, Pepsi products still do. The environmental group recently said that the caramel colouring used in Pepsi still contains a worrisome level of a carcinogen, even after the drink maker said it would change its formula. In March, PepsiCo Inc and Coca Cola Co both said they would adjust their formulas nationally after California passed a law mandating drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens come with cancer warning label. The changes were made for drinks sold in California. The chemical is 4-methylimidazole, or also known as 4-Mel.

Pepsi said its caramel colouring suppliers are changing their manufacturing process to cut the amount. That process is complete in California and will be finished in February 2014 in the rest of the country. Pepsi said it will also be taken out globally, but did not indicate a timeline. What happens till then as consumers merrily gulp down the beverage? Do the big international brands bother about the consumers around the world?

‘Bunga Bunga’ & ‘Ruby the Heart Stealer’

For once it did not happen in India. Berlo is guilty of paying for sex with a pretty-looking minor. Italy’s ex-Prime Minister got seven-years in jail and is barred from public office but free during appeals process. The verdict  brings to a climax a two-year-old trial which sparked a media frenzy amid allegations of strippers dressed as nuns and erotic party games with topless girls during his term in power.

Italy’s ex-PM Berlusconi has had sex in exchange for money on several occasions in 2010 with a then 17-year-old sexy and attractive girl known as ‘Ruby the Heart Stealer’ at the raunchy ‘bunga bunga’ parties at his Milan mansion, which was very much in the news those days.

Ruby whose real name is Karima El Mahrouq, moved with her family from Morocco to Sicily in 2003. She ran away from home at 14; was spotted by one of Berlo’s cronies at a beauty contest and was invited to entertain him. She was arrested in May 2010 for stealing a bracelet. Berlo claimed she is the niece of then, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and asked police to release her to keep under wraps his liaison with the underage girl. Later he said, he had no idea that Ruby was not Mubarak’s niece. He says it was part of a series of lies that Ruby had told him, including her age. A lot of flip flop statements were made as a cover-up, which did not cut ice with the court.

Ruby told the court that she attended Berlo’s parties with naked girls. Later she changed her version, insisting that the majority of the things she said were not true, including how much money she got from Berlo. She admitted to lying about having sex for money with Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Now she’s married to a night club manager and has a cute baby girl, away from the limelight.

The recent verdict closes a two-year trial that has distracted Italy with its accounts of ‘bunga bunga’ parties at the billionaire’s private villa outside Milan while he was Prime Minister in 2010.

Berlusconi always denied the wrong doing and says he is being prosecuted by the left wing party. He says the purported sex parties were just elegant dinner where female guests performed ‘burlesque’ shows. El Mahrouq denied having sex with Berlusconi.

Berlusconi’s age also means he is unlikely to ever see the inside of the prison cell because of lenient sentencing guidelines in Italy for people over the age of 70 years.
