Narsobawadi – Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya

Narsobawadi commonly known as Narsobawadi or Narsobachi Wadi is a small quiet town on the banks of the river Krishna in Shirol Tehsil in Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Narsobawadi gets its name from the presence of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, the Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya......

I have been to Narsobawadi a few times to attend and participate in the thread ceremonies as per tradition of the young boys, my relatives in the close and extended family. And I would always wonder why come all the way and perform the ceremony here. And again on an invitation, few weeks ago, I visited the place for another thread ceremony. The place is popular venue for thread ceremony and other rituals because of its location, spiritual atmosphere and traditionally considered auspicious. Besides, even Jains too consider this place spiritually important, and visit the place as they have an old temple and other facilities here for their devotees.

The temple
If you are travelling by train, from Mumbai to Kolhapur; about two-three stations before Kolhapur is a small, old and quiet  station called Jaysinghpur. Few people alight here unless they need to travel to nearby areas.  Devotees coming to visit Narsobawadi by train, need to get down at this station, it's is the nearest station to Narsobawadi. Narsobawadi is about 17 km from here. Autos, private vehicles, Jeeps are available and drop you at Narsobawadi.

Once you reach this quiet town, you feel time has stood still, untouched by modernity. However now, some traditional houses have given way to ground plus one and two storey small structures and buildings in the bylanes, with family residences for the occupants, the priests and his family who perform the various ceremonies, including thread ceremonies. Besides they have a couple of rooms, a small hall, common kitchen for cooking and catering meals for the functions and guests. Mainly populated by traditional Maharashtrian Brahmin families; priests who are involved in arranging and conducting ceremonies and rituals for families and people coming from different parts of Maharashtra and elsewhere.

Narsobawadi commonly known as Narsobawadi or Narsobachi Wadi is a small town on the banks of the river Krishna in Shirol Tehsil in Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Narsobawadi gets its name from the presence of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, the Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya. This has become a major pilgrim spot for many Shri Dattatrey devotees. Also, here is the confluence of two rivers – Panchganga and Krishna.

Narsobawadi is famous for the temple of Shri Narasimha Saraswati (1378-1458). Shri Dattatreya in Narasimha Saraswati incarnation is believed to have lived here for as long as 12 years. The life story, his philosophy and related incidents are described in Shri Guru Charitra. There are no images or idols here  to show his presence, but there are two padukas or slippers which immortalize his avatar.

The following festivals are celebrated in the temple – Datta Jayanthi, Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated as per the Hindu calendar Pushya month, Gopal Kala Utsav is celebrated from Magha Poornima to Phalguna Panchami, Sripada Srivallabh Jayanthi is celebrated in Badrapada Masa on Ganesh Chaturthi day and Dakshin dwar Sohla in which Krishna river water flows from North gate to South gate through the temple.

Normally I would attend the traditional ceremony and return. This time I got an opportunity to spend some time around the temple and nearby areas which now has a line of shops, small hotels, small eateries and hawkers. We were keen to have a cup of hot tea and were on the lookout for a tea shop, preferring to have it at a local chaiwalla rather than at a restaurant. While walking down, I noticed a well-laid out handcart with a charming young woman busy making dosas. Going closer, noticed she was serving various types of dosas and snacks. And she also offered tea and coffee. We ordered a dosa along with tea. Standing and having crisp paper dosa, noticed that behind the handcart, she also ran a restaurant – Shri Dattatreya Caterers offering Karnataka style cuisine. There were many patrons sitting and enjoying the meals and snacks. It is run by the young couple, the woman, her husband and an elderly woman, who must be the husband’s mother, with a small child playing around with a cell phone.

Since they were all busy, I couldn’t talk much with anyone, except exchanging a few words with the charming lady, and taking her business card. But what struck me was the hardworking and multi-tasking woman - taking orders, making dosas and snacks all the time, serving tea and coffee around, handling the cash. And all this she did adeptly with a smile on her face. If you visit Narsobawadi, do visit this place – Shri Dattatreya Caterers and taste the tea and delicacies made by her. You too will be impressed by her preparation and deft handling of many things.

Suez Canal – 150 years of operations

Most of us have heard about Suez Canal during the middle-east conflict between Egypt and Israel. Its 150 years since the inauguration of the Suez Canal. It’s an artificial waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Gulf of Suez, and then to the Red sea. Suez Canal took 10 years to build. The canal is 193 km long, 24 meter deep and its width varies, 60 meters at its narrowest. Nearly 60,000 workers were hired to remove about 74 million cubic meters of earth. The canal was completed at a cost of 433 million Francs. Before the Suez Canal was constructed, the ships had to take much longer route via Cape of Good Hope to reach middle east and Asia.

What is special about USS New York?

Made from the World Trade Center

A US Navy assault ship built with steel from the fallen World Trade Center and named in honour of the city and state that were home to the twin towers. A ship with a lot of sentiments and memories......

USS New York (LPD-21) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock and the fifth ship of same name. A symbolic amount of steel salvaged from the World Trade Centre after it was destroyed in the September 11 terrorist attacks was used in the construction of this ship. USS New York is named in honour of New York city where the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred.

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. The $ 1 billion ship was built in Louisiana with about 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel melted down and used in the bow. It is the fifth in a new class warship – designed for mission, that include special operations against terrorists. It carries a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship’s bow section. When it was poured into the moulds on September 9, 2003, ‘those big rough steelworkers treated it total reverence,’ recalled Navy Captain Kevin Wensing, who was there. ‘It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.’

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the World Trade Center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the ‘hair on my neck stood up.’ ‘It had a big meaning to it for all of us,’ he said. ‘They knocked us down. They can’t keep us down. We are going to be back.’

The ship’s motto? ‘Never Forget.’

Saving No & Spending Yes!

The elders and parents in the Indian middle-class households often told the children to learn to save and never to borrow money, which in today’s terminology means – avoid debt. And today it means – stop doing business. And it could seem ridiculous as the present world thrives and is driven by money.

With political pressure and criticism by the opposition parties against tall claims made by the Prime Minister about getting the black money stacked abroad in 100 days, has fallen flat. Then as a second thought, came the idea of getting black money stacked in India. Some bureaucrat came up with a brilliant suggestion, and told the government that saved money is actually black money if its not kept in the bank. It’s the most crazy and bizarre advice. Many people even in cities, small towns and villages like dealing and holding cash, and never in their wildest dream realised that one day we would have a government that hated cash. It was ready to disturb and hurt millions of innocent Indians in the attempt to catch a few dishonest tax evaders, who are sitting comfortably abroad and laughing at the government’s acclaimed masterstroke. The government spokespersons are finding it difficult to defend or convincingly explain this major policy decision and it’s repercussions in the various debates being conducted on different television channels. Though the government and some experts have praised the government’s demonetisation policy; it has been criticised by financial experts and economists in India and abroad. Recently an influential Chinese daily wrote – India’s demonetisation drive is a big failure and has put Indian economy back by at least a decade.

The elders and parents in the Indian middle-class households often told the children to learn to save and never to borrow money, which in today’s terminology means – avoid debt. And today it means – stop doing business. And it could seem ridiculous as the present world thrives and is driven by money. In fact it has become a part of our everyday lives. We hear – I have to pay EMIs for our car, flat, appliances, etc. The e-commerce sites are a big temptation for the young, making it easy for us to buy all the stuff we don’t actually need. It’s a burden for those who live with it.

Indians generally had this saving habit, even from their meager incomes. But the new generation has thrown caution to the winds and is on a buying spree. And this in turn has brought all types of products - consumer, durables and appliances of both Indian and foreign brands to the market place, very different from what we knew and grew up in a conservative society and environment.

People are buying and enjoying life. They are borrowing money from wherever they can - to learn, travel, have a good time, dress better and eat different food and exotic cuisines, without caring to know, that with the spending they do, it has an indirect tax component which hurts the poor as well as the rich.

The government wants you to spend. To further encourage it, it is bringing the interest rates down for home loans, car loans, gadget loans, etc. Apart from this, you are offered credit card, ready to lend you money instantly and fall into a debt trap.

Savings is no longer in fashion. The government is discouraging it. If you save money from your tax-paid income and earn some interest on that saving, you pay tax again on it. Digital India is the in thing. How far will it succeed, is difficult to predict.

Notebandi – the cash crash

Did the expert advisors to the government ever try to assess the extent of black money in cash before deciding to take 86 per cent of the money out of circulation? In reality, not even six per cent of the country’s black money is stored in cash, say the financial experts......

The message about demonetization is clear. It has disturbed the Indian economy. But it’s too late for the government to roll it back. Many economists and experts have criticized the move and the implementation. Japanese brokerage Nomura issued a grim report about the impact of demonetization in India. It expects growth to fall to 6 per cent or below, as rural demand from fertilizers to consumer items shrinks sharply. Nomura has an index that tracks lot of numbers to forecast growth. This, index it explained, was down to its lowest levels since it was created.

Some call it a monumental tragedy that is harming farmers, traders, small business and daily wage workers. Many small scale units have shut down or the workers have returned back to their villages. Is demonetization and its ugly fallout the beginning of the end of Modi? Modi is losing friends as anger grows over Indian cash crackdown and constant flip flops by the RBI. Nomura could have added that not only was demonetization unnecessary, its execution has been botched. The Reserve Bank of India, the finance ministry overseeing it has issued no less than 60 notices and circulars that contradict each other since 8/11. These create confusion among banker and citizen equally. Now people, who initially supported believing the good intention of the government, are visibly angry. The general perception is, people might forget the ordeal after a few days, but may not forgive the government who created this mess.

Did the expert advisors to the government ever try to assess the extent of black money in cash before deciding to take 86 per cent of the money out of circulation? In reality, not even six per cent of the country’s black money is stored in cash, say the financial experts. Chidambaram, the former finance minister says - What the government has been claiming as a surgical strike appears to be a surgeon operating on a patient without diagnosing him first.

One of the big impacts is instantly visible on the residential sector which has been experiencing excruciatingly slow growth in recent times. Let us hope the New year will bring some respite and good days to the aam aadmi!

Rama in Thailand:

You must be aware, centuries ago, the influence of Hinduism and Buddhism spread to Far East and South East Asian countries like Cambodia (earlier known as Kambhoj), Thailand, Indonesia, etc. Did you know that in Bangkok, it has a Sri Ayodhya road and Rama-I road. There are more such interesting facts.

Bangkok itself was established as the capital of Thailand by King Rama –I, the founder of the Chakri dynasty. It is evident from the history of Thailand that many generations of Thai Kings have identified themselves with Rama, who was regarded as an ideal ruler. And therefore, successive kings of the dynasty, have continued to hold the title of Rama with their names. The present king, His Majesty Bhumi Pol Adulyadej, is called King Rama –IX.

Alongwith Buddhism, the Hindu epic of Ramayana (known as Ramakin in Thai version) has excerised powerful influence over the Thai people. There is another Ayodhaya situated about 90 km north of Bangkok. Now lying in ruins, this ancient city, known as Ayutthaya in Thai, was founded as the capital of Thailand in 1350 by King Rama Thibode.

Demonetisation – the facts

The move, if it will meet the objectives of curbing corruption, counterfeit currencies and black money as spelt out by Prime Minister, is to be seen in the coming months. Many feel the real impact of demonetization .........

A lot has been said and written about demonetization. This is the third demonetization of higher currency undertaken by the Indian authorities, if we include the one done just before independence in 1946. The move by the government to ban Rs 500 and 1000 notes has been praised and criticized. In elected democracies major economic decisions have a political dimension. No politician would willingly risk growth, commerce and jobs if he did not know there would be political gains at the end of the tunnel. Whether it is a 2% GDP growth loss, a deceleration is unavoidable.

Many say, it’s a brave move by the government; majority agree, the intent is good but the implementation has been adhoc and shoddy. But the fact is, it has crippled the nation. There are long queues in front of banks and a reduction in trade and business. It is bound to impact on the GDP of the country. It is very rare to remove 86 per cent of the currency in one go. The logistics of such an operation is mammoth one. The government has been accused of being reactive to the situation with adhoc decisions. The withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes has created havoc for families with marriages and other ceremonies scheduled, has also hit business and trade. There is a slowdown in the manufacturing industry, small scale units and unorganized sectors have been hit hard. The rural economy too has been crippled.

The benefits if any of demonization, only time will tell. The only short term benefits of it would result in people shifting towards the use of debit cards and digital transactions in the urban areas. In rural areas, illiterate farmers may be exploited as they are only used to cash transactions, and very few number of banks in remote areas are accessible to them. The real estate will definitely be affected by demonetization exercise, as traditionally seen a very high involvement of black money and cash transactions.

Whatever the misgivings about the long term impact on the economy, no one can predict what is likely to unfold. We will have to wait and watch. But one major factor will undoubtedly remain as a legacy of this unprecedented move is the return of the government in our lives in an irritatingly permanent way. The role of the authorities in our lives is bound to go up substantially. The fear being, somebody is watching.

The move, if it will meet the objectives of curbing corruption, counterfeit currencies and black money as spelt out by Prime Minister, is to be seen in the coming months. Many feel the real impact of demonetization will be felt in about six months time affecting agriculture, small scale industry and the unorganized sector. And also trade, business and commerce in general. It is still too early to accurately gauge the depth of the shakeup this has caused. Demonetisation may whiten the economy, but for now it has blackened the mood!
