Air India was founded on 15 October 1932 by JRD Tata of the Tata group and was then known as Tata Airlines. After World War II it was nationalized by the government of India in 1953 was renamed Air India. Attempts were made to privatize Air India, and from 2006 onwards, it suffered losses after its merger with Indian Airlines. Another privatization attempt was launched in 2017, which concluded with ownership of the airline and associated properties returning to the Tata Group after 69 years.

Air India now operates flights to domestic and Asian destinations through its subsidiary Air India express. And Air India operates certain domestic and short-haul international and long-haul international routes covering major cities around the world. They are trying their best, but the best is not enough. The fact is Air India is having a tough time and there’s a lack of confidence. Besides Air India has to compete with other airlines around the globe.

Before the Tatas took over Air India, in the early years the national carrier, the airline was popular and recognized worldwide for its hospitality, attractive interior of aircrafts representing Indian culture, and good service. Their mascot, Maharaja proudly represented all this. But over the years, after a few decades, the downward slide started in the eighties. Ex-employees of Air India accept the company was overstaffed; the attitude of staff and workers was like that of a government employee, careless and exploiting the available facilities, including free flights to employees even in profitable sectors. The once profit-making airline, loved by passengers worldwide, began to decay and pile up losses. The reputation of the Maharaja eroded, and regular Air India passengers preferred other, more efficient airlines. It started to lose business in many different profitable sectors. Air India, once a giant, was now struggling to survive and even to pay salaries. And people flying home from Gulf countries, a profitable route would say, ‘Air India me suffer karo’ instead of ‘Air India me Safar Karo,’ due to the poor service.

After Tatas took over Air India, though some cosmetic changes have happened, nothing much has changed. Staff and workers behave like careless government employees; the attitude seems to be the same, though Tatas are trying to inculcate the new work culture. It might take time. Air India hostesses and their uniforms with attractive traditional design and color combinations were once the envy of other airlines. Today the old silk sari, kurta and trousers, and blazer remind me of the glorious days.

Some of the hostesses, I think from Air India Express wear something like a half saree and pyjama, which looks rather out of sorts, awkward and funny. I wonder who selected this as the uniform for the hostesses. I spoke to a couple of hostesses during the flights; they themselves don’t like it. Say, it's uncomfortable and feels odd. It's neither a saree nor a pyjama and looks ordinary. Air India should look into this and provide them with something more elegant and comfortable. This stands nowhere when you see the elegant uniforms of other airlines. The elegant sari, blazer and the kurta/kurti with trouser is liked by the hostesses and admired by the passengers. Reminds you of the comfortable and glorious Maharaja days. It has that Indian touch, elegant and Indianness which is liked specially by Indian passengers flying in and out, even foreigners love it

After taking over Vistara, the Tatas seem to be confused about whether to maintain a separate identity or merge it fully with Air India. Some experts suggest 3 entities - Air India for international travel, Indian Airlines for domestic travel and Vistara for both domestic and international. These three entities will be easy to handle, creating three strong brands.  Air India should look into it. Aviation, business, and marketing experts know better. The decision should help to bring back the good old days, the Maharaja travel of Air India. Air India and Air India Express is very confusing the poor service remains the same except for the nomenclature.

After the Ahmedabad crash, and some other incidents, the reputation of the airline has taken a real beating. Air India should bring back the trust with proper service, right attitude, safe flights, and fit aircraft. And the staff should be trained in public relations so they are efficient, polite, and helpful while interacting with people. Times change, things change, one has to change, but sometimes old is gold! I hope Air India gets its confidence back and will soon be a liked and becomes the favorite airline especially for Indian travellers who still have soft corner. Automatically foreign passengers will choose to fly Air India. In today’s world safe flying, good service, competitive fares and reaching your destination on time counts. If they can achieve this, Air India will be back in business.

Educated illiterate in Pak!

Pakistan has plenty of them. Recently a senior Pakistani in an interview said, Pakistan is way ahead in technology. Just like our pilots jammed Rafale and hit them, similarly, if India blocks Indus water by making dams, we can open and close the gates of the dams. We can control it from here.

Similarly, another senior Pakistani journalist, Hamid Mir, made a fool of himself by repeating something similar in another talk show and told the anchor not to ask him more about it, as it is a top secret. Another smart Pakistani woman says in a video, we were not aware our technology was so advanced that we could fool, jam and beat the Indians. The women are worse and expose their ignorance fully. Half knowledge and relying on the Pak media is dangerous. They make a fool of themselves and become a laughing stock.

And now there's a statement by the Rafale maker—Pakistanis claim that it shot 3 Indian Rafales during Operation Sindoor, which is inaccurate, seemingly agreeing with CDS Gen. Anil Chauhan's statement on the operation. He had said during war there are damages to both sides but not what Pakistan media has been saying. The truth is slowing coming out and Pakistanis now realize the serious damage caused by India. Pakistanis are all big boast without substance.

Fail to understand how Pakistanis speak so confidently and digest such lies and propaganda, even the educated Pakistanis, after repeatedly taking a beating from India. The majority of Pakistanis believe they won this time too, like they beat India in the earlier 4 wars, forgetting they run after atta and talk about data. They are surviving on loans and borrowing from the IMF. Most of their anchors, political experts, and analysts still speak about Pakistan being the leader of the Islamic world. Their army and ISI being number 1. And try to show the world Pakistan is the main enemy of Israel, and they intend to attack them, forgetting their own PM saying, Beggars can’t be choosers.

On Trump’s invite, Asif Munir went to the US. Many Pakistanis said, He’s a brave man, going to the US to stop Israel from attacking Iran. Little realizing that it would be a costly lunch, with Pak backstabbing Iran as they did with Afghanistan. No wonder people say, for a few dollars Pakistanis can betray their own. Afghans know it very well and are targeting Pakistan.
