Americans are keen to get out of war-torn Afghanistan and have started talks with Taliban. As America and Taliban prepare to sign a historic troop pullout deal recently; we look at the key figures regarding the cost and loss of personnel, defining the 18-year long Afghan war that could finally come to an end after a great deal of loss to life and property and a generation of Afghan people who have seen no peace but violence and destruction.

It began almost two decades ago. The US-led coalition war on terror in Afghanistan was launched on October 7, 2001 in the wake of the daring 9/11 attack on American, on American soil. It is now the longest war ever waged by America after the Vietnam war in the sixties.

The staggering cost of the war was beyond expectations. In September 2019, the Pentagon estimated the cost of US operation in Afghanistan to be $776 billion since 2001. But more recently, a study done by Brown University says the cost of America’s wars exceeds the Pentagon’s estimate. The Brown researchers say, the US wars on terror in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan since 2001 have cost $6.4 trillion.

The NATO alliance committed to the Afghan conflict in December 2001, but the US has provided the largest contingent. At its peak, the US had 98,000 troops on the ground. Now there are about 16,500 military personnel from 38 countries in Afghanistan. The Pentagon estimates that the total US deployment in the country is about 14,000.

The US has paid the highest price in terms of foreign fatalities in Afghanistan, with 1,909 troops killed and 20,700 wounded. UK lost 454 personnel followed by Canada 157 and France 89. The United Nations estimates that 32,000 to 60,000 Afghan civilians have been killed in the conflict that started in 2001.

The US and the Taliban have signed an "agreement for bringing peace" to Afghanistan after more than 18 years of conflict. The US and Nato allies have agreed to withdraw all troops within 14 months if the militants uphold the deal. President Trump said it had been a "long and hard journey" in Afghanistan. "It's time after all these years to bring our people back home," he said.Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to follow. Under the agreement, the militants also agreed not to allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

Amazon said sellers – can no longer offer the book - as it breaks the website code of conduct but didn’t comment on what prompted the effective ban on Mein Kampf. Amazon has banned sale of many other far-right books following campaign by Holocaust charities.
