When you think of Las Vegas, it reminds you of a fun-filled lively place. It's a happening city and a colourful place with joyful people, fun spots, music, entertainment, casinos, themed hotels and great night life. Let us take a tour around the city.....

Recently Nevada was in the news for the wrong reasons. But Las Vegas, in Nevada’s Mojave Desert is a fascinating place with a panoramic view, with a blend of old and new structures and much more. A very lively place, and a colourful city. It’s a happening place with a vibrant and beautiful nightlife centered around the 24-hour casinos and other entertainment options with music everywhere. It’s main street and focal point is the Strip, just over 4 miles long. This boulevard is home to themed hotels with elaborate displays, such as fountains synchronized to music as well as replicas of an Egyptian pyramid, the Venetian Grand Canal and the Eiffel Tower.

Hard Saruda is a pretty woman of Thai origin, born in North East of Thailand, educated in Bangkok and a good friend, now lives in Switzerland after her marriage in 2001 to a Swiss man. She has a 14-year old son. She is a housewife and also works as a tourist guide in her spare time. She is passionate about photography and loves to shoot beautiful places and people. Hobbit – Where did they come from & where did they vanish?

They were discovered only in 2003. Hobbits’ were about 3 feet 6 inches tall and weighed approximately 30 kg, as estimated from a female skeleton. Where did Indonesia’s mysterious Homo Floresiensis, an extinct mini human species popularly known as hobbit, come from?...........

One must have read about the tiny pygmy tribe in the Phantom comics. It could be a figment of imagination of the author and illustrator. But it is true, they existed. Meet Homo floresiensis, also known as Hobbit lived in Asia, specifically Indonesia about 100,000-50,000 years ago. They were discovered only in 2003. Hobbits’ were about 3 feet 6 inches tall and weighed approximately 30 kg, as estimated from a female skeleton. Where did Indonesia’s mysterious Homo Floresiensis, an extinct mini human species popularly known as hobbit, come from? New findings from Australian study claim to end a popular theory about their origins and add yet another dimension to a decade old debate.

There are different theories about their arrival, existence and disappearance. The hobbit’s remains were first discovered in Flores, an island in Indonesia, in 2003. One popular theory is the hobbit descended from the larger Homo erectus – an extinct human species that occupied Asia. The theory is that members of the group, believed to be the first humans to stray out of Africa, reached Flores and shrank to just 1 meter tall because of the scarcity of resources on the island. Another theory is the hobbits were simply short members of Homo sapiens, our own species.

The new take on the subject based on the new findings say – The Australian National University (ANU) found the hobbits were most likely a sister species of Homo habilis, one of the earliest known species of humans found in Africa 1.75 million years ago and the first makers of stone tools. The findings say, one group of Homo habilis moved out of Africa 2 million years ago, much before Homo erectus did, and to Flores.

The ANU team led by Debbie Argue constructed the hobbit’s family tree. They also expanded the scope of their study, where previous research focused mostly on the skull and lower jaw; the new study used 133 data points ranging from the skull, jaws, teeth, arms, legs and shoulders. Debbie said, none of the data supported the theory that the hobbit evolved from the Homo erectus. She added, ‘It would be hard to understand how you could have that regression. Why would the jaw of the Homo erectus evolve back to the primitive condition in Homo floresiensis.

But the question remains – what happened to the Hobbit? The species appears to have died out soon after Homo sapiens left Africa 60,000 years ago and walked into Asia. A possible clash between the two might have wiped them out.

About Jats in India

Received an old and interesting extract from the Appletons' Journal published in 1876. I would like to share it with my readers about how the foreigners felt and understood the people of this region.

It describes about the Hindus, specifically about Jats, a martial race in India. This valuable information has been shared by Col Ravindra Mann, who is presently stationed in Mangalore, Karnataka.

Women love to remember the many firsts in their lives, like – first love, first date, first kiss, first dress/saree, first flight, etc.

But at the same time love to forget a few firsts like – first streak of grey hair, first sign of getting old, first glimpse of a wrinkle, first feel of going out of shape and first realization that she is crossing 30.

Men too have their likes and dislikes, but soon forget the count of it! Men are not too attached to it. They remember for a while and forget it. A seasoned husband is one who forgets his marriage anniversary or his wife’s birthday at least once and I need not mention the repercussion!

India-Russia Strategic Connection

Though India in recent years has increasingly turned to the US for mega arms deals, Russia can take solace from the fact that defence projects worth around $10.5 billion are on the verge of being finalized.

After the news of Lockeed joining hands with Tata to produce F-16 in India, Defence minister Arun Jaitley will be leading a high-powered military delegation to Novosibirsk and Moscow this week, at a time when Russia is keen to restore the long-standing numero uno position in the large and lucrative Indian arms market. Since decades, Russia has been India’s largest and reliable arms supplier, with military-technical contracts worth $65 billion since 1960 during the Congress government in the centre.

Around sixty per cent of equipment with the Indian armed forces is of Russian origin, from MiG and Sukhoi-30MKI fighters to T-90s tanks, kilo-class submarines, Talwar-class frigates and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. Russia is now facing a stiff challenge from the United States of America, which has bagged Indian arms deals worth $15 billion since 2007.

However, there are some ongoing projects with Russia, such as – Indian Air Force has inducted 240 of 272 Sukoi jets contracted for over $12 billion, with bulk of them being licensed produced by HAL. The Indian army has inducted 1,000 of 1,657 T-90S main battle tanks being contracted for over $4.5 billion, with 1,000 of them being licensed produced by OFB.

Besides this, there are some other projects in pipeline with Russia. The negotiations are on for lease of a second nuclear-powered submarine for $1.5 billion. India currently operates INS Chakra. The purchase of five S-400 Triumf air defence systems for $5.5 billion, the acquisition of 4 Grigorivich-class stealth frigates (two to be built in India) for $4 billion and the joint production of 200 Kamov-226T light utility helicopters for over $1 billion. And of this 140 of them to be built in India.

As reported earlier, India will ink the long-pending final R&D contract for the FGFA – it will require an estimated $25 billion to induct 127 such single-seat jets, only if there is extensive transfer of technology. The cost benefit analysis is still under way. India is yet to be convinced about the economic and technical viability of going in for the multi-billion dollar joint development and production of a fifth-generation fighter aircraft called Sukoi T-50 or PAK-FA with Russia.

Truck drivers of India

Trucking in India is a world by itself. It is generally believed, within the truck community there is a quiet friction between drivers from the north and south India. One can barely see divers from north, mainly Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh or Rajasthan spend time or chit chat with those from Karnataka, Andhra, Kerala or Tamilnadu; may be its due to the cultural divide or a mutual suspicion. Most drivers speak or understand 2-3 languages. Dhabas or road-side hotels are the drivers’ favorite eating and resting spot.

As the trucks ply all over the country, even the remote corners, it is one of the best media or vehicle to advertise and spread social messages across the country. One of the most interesting aspects is the lines or messages painted on the back side of the truck. The most common is – Horn Please. Ok! Some lines are funny and some thought provoking.

Narsobawadi – Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya

Narsobawadi commonly known as Narsobawadi or Narsobachi Wadi is a small quiet town on the banks of the river Krishna in Shirol Tehsil in Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Narsobawadi gets its name from the presence of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, the Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya......

I have been to Narsobawadi a few times to attend and participate in the thread ceremonies as per tradition of the young boys, my relatives in the close and extended family. And I would always wonder why come all the way and perform the ceremony here. And again on an invitation, few weeks ago, I visited the place for another thread ceremony. The place is popular venue for thread ceremony and other rituals because of its location, spiritual atmosphere and traditionally considered auspicious. Besides, even Jains too consider this place spiritually important, and visit the place as they have an old temple and other facilities here for their devotees.

The temple

If you are travelling by train, from Mumbai to Kolhapur; about two-three stations before Kolhapur is a small, old and quiet station called Jaysinghpur. Few people alight here unless they need to travel to nearby areas. Devotees coming to visit Narsobawadi by train, need to get down at this station, it's is the nearest station to Narsobawadi. Narsobawadi is about 17 km from here. Autos, private vehicles, Jeeps are available and drop you at Narsobawadi.

Once you reach this quiet town, you feel time has stood still, untouched by modernity. However now, some traditional houses have given way to ground plus one and two storey small structures and buildings in the bylanes, with family residences for the occupants, the priests and his family who perform the various ceremonies, including thread ceremonies. Besides they have a couple of rooms, a small hall, common kitchen for cooking and catering meals for the functions and guests. Mainly populated by traditional Maharashtrian Brahmin families; priests who are involved in arranging and conducting ceremonies and rituals for families and people coming from different parts of Maharashtra and elsewhere.

Narsobawadi commonly known as Narsobawadi or Narsobachi Wadi is a small town on the banks of the river Krishna in Shirol Tehsil in Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Narsobawadi gets its name from the presence of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, the Purna avatar of Lord Dattatreya. This has become a major pilgrim spot for many Shri Dattatrey devotees. Also, here is the confluence of two rivers – Panchganga and Krishna.

Narsobawadi is famous for the temple of Shri Narasimha Saraswati (1378-1458). Shri Dattatreya in Narasimha Saraswati incarnation is believed to have lived here for as long as 12 years. The life story, his philosophy and related incidents are described in Shri Guru Charitra. There are no images or idols here to show his presence, but there are two padukas or slippers which immortalize his avatar.

The following festivals are celebrated in the temple – Datta Jayanthi, Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated as per the Hindu calendar Pushya month, Gopal Kala Utsav is celebrated from Magha Poornima to Phalguna Panchami, Sripada Srivallabh Jayanthi is celebrated in Badrapada Masa on Ganesh Chaturthi day and Dakshin dwar Sohla in which Krishna river water flows from North gate to South gate through the temple.

Normally I would attend the traditional ceremony and return. This time I got an opportunity to spend some time around the temple and nearby areas which now has a line of shops, small hotels, small eateries and hawkers. We were keen to have a cup of hot tea and were on the lookout for a tea shop, preferring to have it at a local chaiwalla rather than at a restaurant. While walking down, I noticed a well-laid out handcart with a charming young woman busy making dosas. Going closer, noticed she was serving various types of dosas and snacks. And she also offered tea and coffee. We ordered a dosa along with tea. Standing and having crisp paper dosa, noticed that behind the handcart, she also ran a restaurant – Shri Dattatreya Caterers offering Karnataka style cuisine. There were many patrons sitting and enjoying the meals and snacks. It is run by the young couple, the woman, her husband and an elderly woman, who must be the husband’s mother, with a small child playing around with a cell phone.

Since they were all busy, I couldn’t talk much with anyone, except exchanging a few words with the charming lady, and taking her business card. But what struck me was the hardworking and multi-tasking woman - taking orders, making dosas and snacks all the time, serving tea and coffee around, handling the cash. And all this she did adeptly with a smile on her face. If you visit Narsobawadi, do visit this place – Shri Dattatreya Caterers and taste the tea and delicacies made by her. You too will be impressed by her preparation and deft handling of many things.

What is special about USS New York?

Made from the World Trade Center

A US Navy assault ship built with steel from the fallen World Trade Center and named in honour of the city and state that were home to the twin towers. A ship with a lot of sentiments and memories......

USS New York (LPD-21) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock and the fifth ship of same name. A symbolic amount of steel salvaged from the World Trade Centre after it was destroyed in the September 11 terrorist attacks was used in the construction of this ship. USS New York is named in honour of New York city where the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred.

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. The $ 1 billion ship was built in Louisiana with about 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel melted down and used in the bow. It is the fifth in a new class warship – designed for mission, that include special operations against terrorists. It carries a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship’s bow section. When it was poured into the moulds on September 9, 2003, ‘those big rough steelworkers treated it total reverence,’ recalled Navy Captain Kevin Wensing, who was there. ‘It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.’

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the World Trade Center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the ‘hair on my neck stood up.’ ‘It had a big meaning to it for all of us,’ he said. ‘They knocked us down. They can’t keep us down. We are going to be back.’

The ship’s motto? ‘Never Forget.’

Indonesia has world’s largest Buddhist temple

The Borobudur Temple, located on the Indonesian island of Java, is the largest Buddhist temple. Built in the 9^th century during the reign of Syailendra dynasty, the temple was constructed with approximately 56,000 cubic meters of volcanic stone, has around 504 Buddha statues and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels. It was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970's.
