WeSchool matches 11 Swedish renewable energy companies with Indian partners

Aims to support the government’s initiative to reduce dependence on expensive imported fossil fuels

April 25, 2014, Mumbai: The ‘India-Swedish Collaborations for Innovative Energy Solutions’ successfully concluded on April 23, 2014 at WeSchool campus in Mumbai. The initiative was led by India-Sweden Innovations´ Accelerator (ISIA), which is a bilateral program that will contribute to facilitating technology transfer and market entrance in India for Swedish innovative companies, focusing on scaling and adapting their technologies in the renewable energy space to the local context. This initiative aims to support Indian government’s plans to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase capacity of renewable energy.  The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India has made a plan for a capacity addition of about 30,000 MW power during the 12th Plan period (2012-17) from various renewable energy sources mostly through private sector participation in the country.   MNRE has also launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission in January, 2010 aiming to 20,000 MW grid power from solar energy by March 31st 2022.

The initiative is supported by Swedish Energy Agency, Business Sweden and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) – Green Business Centre, while Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research (WeSchool) and Mälardalen University are the academic partners.

Based on a 2009 EU directive to promote the development of renewable energy sources, Sweden aims to increase renewable energy to 50 per cent of national supply by 2020. The present figure is 48 per cent, largely thanks to the large proportion of hydropower and biofuels in the energy system. The 48 per cent figure for renewable energy – including electricity, district heating and fuel – is higher than that in most EU countries.

Renowned Indian energy companies like Sahara India Pariwar, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, Tata Power, Ultratech etc attended the event seeking potential partnerships with Swedish counterparts like Opcon, S Solar, HiNation, FOV Biogas, Clean Motion etc in the form of joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions and the like. The initiative will be taken forward by 11 teams which will comprise of one Indian company and one Swedish company in each team.  The teams will also comprise of a total of 35 students from WeSchool and Institute for Future Education Entrepreneurship and Leadership (iFEEL), who would be working together for the next few months to create future proof business models that can be implemented in the Indian market. Such developments would help fulfill India’s alarming per capita power consumption which is estimated to have doubled from approximately 400 kWh in 2007 to almost 800 kWh in 2012, while the power generation capacity increased only 99GW in the past 11 years. India is an attractive market for renewable energy due to both the availability of high solar radiance, wind speeds, as well as the power deficit. Renewable energy lends itself to decentralized generation and distribution further makes it an attractive option for India.

Also, the technology innovations from Sweden included both Business to Business and Business to Customer solutions with emphasis on solutions for rural market as well.

Talking on the occasion, Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool said, “Rapid development and population explosion has created a sharp gap between India’s demand and supply for energy. Being one of the worst hit nations due to climate change, it’s necessary to take steps that will help reduce dependency on conventional resources like coal and gas and explore deeper in the clean technology segment thereby reducing our carbon footprint. This initiative is an ideal platform to explore new avenues in renewable energy space using Sweden’s expertise and India’s vast resources like solar, small-hydro, biomass etc, to meet the energy requirements in a sustainable and affordable manner."

He added, "This is also a great opportunity for our students to work with these companies and get hands on experience in implementing their theoretical knowledge to practical use."

Mr Ludvig Lindstrom, Country Manager India, Swedish Energy Agency said, “Sweden’s objective to have a secure and sustainable energy ecosystem has lead to the country’s rapid developments in this space. Sweden is one of the few countries in the world with strong capabilities in the renewable energy and clean technology industry. So, today we aspire to spread our success to other global nations like India which is on a growth spree. India is struggling to suffice the energy requirements of its highly aspirational populace. This initiative would be a great opportunity for them to induce developments in the renewable energy space through collaborations with Swedish companies. We hope, this will help bring in innovative technologies that will meet India’s energy requirements at affordable rates and also boost bilateral relationship between both the countries.”

The Mega Show - it happens in India only!

The mega show in India every five years is the greatest show on earth, where 815 million people will vote to elect 543 members of parliament, where one party or group in the majority forms the stable or unstable government and the rest sit in the opposition. Is this a perfect or imperfect democracy is a different question. This is how India elects its MPs (members of parliament). From amongst whom the Prime Minister and the Ministers form the cabinet of the world’s largest democracy, is selected. And this happened since India gained Independence and became a republic.

The great Indian election carnival, the world’s largest democratic exercise starts from 7 April’14. The sheer size of the democratic exercise is mind boggling. The polling commences on 7 April and ends on 12 May’14 spread over 9 phases and 36 days. The poll verdict will be announced on16 May’14. The voting will be held in 543 constituencies with over 815 million voters, with over 23 million first-time voters. 11 million election personnel are likely to be deployed in 9,30,000 polling stations with over 14,68,430 electronic voting machines to be used for voting. Managing and conducting the elections peacefully is a major achievement by the Election Commission of India with the support of personnel and security forces to man the polling booths.

Area-wise Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir with over 1,73,266.37 sq km is the largest constituency and voter-wise it is Outer Delhi is the largest constituency. And area-wise Chandni Chowk with 10.59 sq km is the smallest constituency and voter-wise Lakshadweep is the smallest constituency. The gender divide as per the Election Commission of India is, male form 52.4% and females form 47.6% of the total voters in India.

After this stupendous exercise, irrespective of who has the last laugh when the results are declared on 16 May, there will be a lot of action with no shortage of controversy, colour or entertainment in the great Indian elections. And the world’s largest democracy moves on.

Say cheers, Indian brand!

Jomashop     Firstcry     PharmEasy     Adidas

The 2 Indian whisky brands – Royal Stag and Officer’s Choice – soaked in $ 1 billion in retail sales last calendar year, keeping growth rates intact despite spiraling prices influenced by tax hikes, according to industry research and company data. It marks the growing demand for these brands.......Just say cheers!

New Domains

Indian retail business is looking up! With over $3 billion sales, dairy giant Amul tops the billion-dollar retail league with Tata’s jewellery brand Tanishq for company, at $14 billion. But liquor has made a big splash with McDowell’s No 1 whisky crossing $1 billion in 2012, and clocking $ 2 billion in 2013 with 23.7 million cases. Topping 300 million of 9 litres each, the Indian liquor market is growing at 4-5% annually. Now Royal Stag whisky’s 14.8 million cases with $1.3 billion sales and Officer’s Choice’s 23.1 million cases with $1.23 billion sales are the new entrants. They are here to stay and bringing mile to liquor consumers.

The 2 Indian whisky brands – Royal Stag and Officer’s Choice – soaked in $ 1 billion in retail sales last calendar year, keeping growth rates intact despite spiraling prices influenced by tax hikes, according to industry research and company data. It marks the growing demand for these brands.

Indian consumer brands in the billion-dollar league by retail value aren’t common. So it’s breaking news in retail business. Royal Stag ($1.3 billion) and Officer’s Choice ($1.25 billion) are the latest to join McDowell’s No 1 whiskey, the first Indian spirits brand to reach the billion mark two years ago. New York-based alcoholic beverage industry digest, Impact said McDowell’s No 1 whiskey approached $2 billion in sales in 2013, as sales value went up on the back of soaring retail prices.

The brand is the flagship of United Spirits, India’s largest distiller controlled by Diageo now, formerly from the Vijay Mallya stable. New whiskey entrants, Royal Stag and Officer’s Choice are owned by Pernod Ricard & Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD) respectively. More domestic liquor brands are expected to enter the billion dollar club in the coming years as state governments furiously hike taxes to raise finances, and companies try premiumizing, translating into higher consumer prices. The demand for liquor is rising.

The mid-priced Royal Stag is an Indian specific brand of French liquor conglomerate, but has emerged as its largest selling brand by volume globally. Pernod Richard has three other billion-dollar brands in Chivas Regal and Ballantine’s Scotch whiskies, besides Absolut Vodka – all 3 international popular brands. Officer’s Choice climbed up from $815 million, Royal Stag grew from $945 million in 2012. ABD, owned by liquor baron Kishore Chhabria, is the largest Indian-owned distiller in a market coming under the sway of multi national companies.

Diageo and Pernod Ricard together control more than 70% of the industry profit pool and over 50% of the volume sales. India’s branded liquor market – topping 300 million cases has slowed to 4-5% growth in the recent past. With new government levies and taxes but the sales don't seem to be affected much. And now its official, United Spirit's McDowell's No 1 has overtaken Smirnoff vodka to become the world's second largest spirits trademark by retail value. Whatever may be the outcome – Just say cheers!

Indian drink goes high!

In Jim Murrays Whiskey Bible (2010), Amrut was rated the third best whisky in the world.
In Ian Baxton's 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die, Amrut was the only Indian brand to feature. Fratelli is the wine, making waves.

If there was an official World Alcohol day, a tipsy drinker would have celebrated thus!

First of all wishing all the fellow drinkers around th world, A very happy World Alcohol day. Then reminding  all the buzzards of all the drinks and brands they have tasted through the years,  as the quality and quantity increased through th years.

*World Alcohol day*

Wishing all alcohol lovers *A very happy alcohol day*.

In our life, problems may go from *Haywards 2000* to *Haywards 5000*,

but we must take them as a *Royal Challenge*

otherwise people will call us *Old Monk* and put a *Black Label* on our name.

So we must learn from *Teachers* to fight like *Jack Daniel*,

live like a *Bagpiper*,

An astonishing, strong and subtle blend that reminds of Indian smells.

Beautiful red colour.

Hot, spicy, enchanting nose. Floral and herbaceous notes.

The heady mix – Soccer & Samba!

The fooball World Cup kicks off in Brazil on June 12. It has already generated much excitment world wide and mong Indian fans.

Yes, the heady mix of soccer and samba; the countdown has begun for the World Cup in the football heaven, Brazil. In just over 3 months time, the Brazil’s football greats will take the stage for a first home World Cup since 1950. And the celebrations will begin.

‘Over 100 days. It’s hard to believe the World Cup is so close. It seems like only yesterday that Brazil was confirmed as the 2014 FIFA World Cup host,’ says Ronaldo, Brazilian legend. The total cost of hosting the World Cup is $3.3 billion on the upgrading of airports; and three airports are being privatized. Brazil is the only team to have played in every World Cup since its inception in 1930. This will be the 20th edition. Brazil is the most successful team in the World Cup history playing in 7 finals, with 5 titles and scoring 210 goals.

Brazil 2014 will be the first tournament where goal line technology will be introduced. Also referees will use ‘vanishing spray’ to demarcate the spot for free kicks and indicate where the defensive wall will stand. The Brazuca – the official match ball of 2014 World Cup was named following a public vote in Brazil involving nearly one million fans.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by area as well as population. Brazil is the most decorated national football team in the history of the World Cup, with five championships: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. After Brazil won its third World Cup in 1970, they were awarded the Jules Rienet trophy, the original World Cup trophy permanently. Made of 18 carat gold, the World Cup trophy weighs 6.175kg and is 36.5cm tall.

From Pele to Neymar, the country has produced for more than 50 years’ worth of great players. Brazil’s unique style of play was epitomized by some of the greats that wore the famous yellow jersey. The ‘samba boys’ play very skilful, creative, free-flowing, fast paced brand of football. Because Brazilians are often not as big and physically strong as Europeans, technical ability is their key to outwit others in the game. Pele, arguably the greatest football player ever, led Brazil to three of those World Championships. His control over the football is legendary, and is largely credited in putting Brazil on top of World football.

Over 10,000 Brazilians play professionally all over the world. A report earlier this year stated that Brazil is the biggest exporter of football talent. Of the 12,309 international transfers registered worldwide last year, 13 per cent or 1,558 involved Brazilian players who exhibit their unique talent in different countries.

Brazil’s colourful and passionate fans – both male and female go overboard to get the football party and fun to reach exciting levels with their colours, costumes and dress. Though the game is the biggest sport with possibly the most partisan crowds in the world, Brazil is one team that holds a universal charm.

When the side lost the 1950 World Cup in the decisive final group stage match to Uruguay at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, it was treated like a national disaster; the loss was called ‘Maracauzo’ or ‘The Maracana Blow’. The Brazilians often refer to their country as ‘O Pais do Futebol’ (the country of football). ‘Brazil very easily recongnised football in our future and tradition and as an opportunity to communicate to the world that Brazil is a powerful nation,’ states former World Cup player, Leonardo.

Many of the Brazil’s talents emerge from the dangerous ‘favelas’ (slums in urban areas). For them this is the only way out of their daily grind to fame and money. Football is also a favourite activity on the 7,491km-long coastline. The 11-a-side format on the beach is improvised on to accommodate more players.

Christ the Redemer statue stands against the backdrop of the Maraca Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the venue of the 2014 final. About 600,000 fans are expected to visit Brazil for the World Cup. And all eyes will be on the female fans cheering out loud for their favourite teams. They also hold an annual female football fans beauty pageant, Gatas do Paulistao, which surely will heat up the race for being the most beautiful woman fan and  with the World Cup this year, it will be a major attraction and draw big crowds.

Football and Samba are the two passions of Brazilians and have become the country’s cultural identity. With the country’s annual carnival already on in Rio de Janeiro, the home to Brazil’s most popular festivities, there couldn’t be a better theme than football ahead of the World Cup in June and the hosts are in a race against time to get the stadiums ready for the mega event.

India and World Cup:
The closest India ever came to playing in a footbll World Cup was in the 1950 edition hosted by Brazil. But the All India Football Federation announced that the team would not attend the World Cup, citing 'diagreements over team selection, and insuficient practice time.'

It’s Carnival time

Goa carnival is popular all over India and abroad too. There is an influx of tourists from all over India and around the world. The world over, like in Brazil, Canada, Italy and the US, these countries host carnival, the annual street festival and party with creative floats, costumes, singing, dancing and it’s the time to freak out. It’s fun and party time for the locals. They are out in their best and colourful dress with an intention to enjoy and have fun and dance to the tempting music.

In India, the most popular carnivals are hosted in Goa, Cochin and Manali winter carnival. This year the Goa carnival will begin on February 28 and go on till March 4 across the fun-loving state. The Goa carnival is normally celebrated before Lent, the 40-day period of fasting, prayer and abstinence before Easter. Its time to celebrate and enjoy, have fun and dance to the music.

Goa carnival is popular all over India and abroad too. There is an influx of tourists from all over India and around the world. The focal point of celebrations is in Panjim, the buzzing capital of Goa, where the maximum number of street performances, floats and a five-day food and cultural festival will be hosted.

The floats draw in the crowds. They depict Goan art, culture, tradition, folk dances, Goan tiatrs (plays) and folk songs known as mandos. However, over the years, it has undergone a major transformation. The float designs have improved and the fun and frolic has gotten more colourful and innovative. The floats are conceptualized and created by the locals, especially youngsters with the help of oldies from various villages of Goa. Now it has become a bit commercialized with even the corporate and private sector participating in this mega event. Top Indian bands come here to showcase their music and are scheduled to perform this year too.

The whole atmosphere is charged with friendly competition and fun. The focal point and the major attraction is the King Momo, a pot-bellied man, who is accompanied by enchanting dancers in colourful and fancy costumes, and sits atop a float as the King of the Carnival. He is selected by the committee from the huge number of requests it receives for this big event. A theme dance, The Samba Square is also planned in Panjim. This year’s carnival is being touted to be the biggest held so far.

In India, different states have celebrated and also hosted one-off carnivals in recent years to showcase the place, attract tourists and boost tourism in their regions. These include the Chandigarh Carnival held in Nov 2013 and the Sikkim Winter Carnival in Dec 2013. These are mainly to draw people, mainly tourists who love to see and participate in the fun, music and dance.

Cochin Carnival in Kerala is held in December. The carnival has been in existence for thirty years and is celebrated in the last week of December. Not many people are aware about it.

It is part of the Potuguese legacy that the coastal port city shares with Goa. Portuguese, Dutch and Indian dance forms are the major attractions in the fun and celebrations. The procession is led by a decorated elephant on New Year’ Day is the highlight of the carnival. People look forward to the festival to showcase their village. They prepare days in advance to put up their best. A friendly competition adds  to the merry making.
Manali Winter Carnival in Himachal Pradesh is held in January. It has been held since 1977. Skiing championships, food festivals, craft bazaars, local music and band competitions, folk dances, street plays and adventure sports are its highlights. This year’s five day winter carnival started on January 2. The Winter Queen Pageant is a popular event.

And around the globe, carnivals are held, like the Rio Carnival in Brazil in February, Trinidad & Tobago Carnival in West Indies in March, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, USA in January-March, Quebec Winter Carnival in Canada in January-February and Venice Carnival in Italy during February-March.

From Goa to Brazil to West Indies to US to Europe, carnival season invites all to enjoy the local flavor and participate in the fun and frolic. Take to the streets, freak out and have great fun!

Carnivals act as a catalyst for tourism and boosting the image of the region, promoting the arts, craft, culture, traditions and food. The Goan Carnival attracts a lot of local and foreign tourists. Its time Goan music, dance, fun and cuisine.
