Portrait of a Woman

An old mystery has been finally solved. A portrait was found under the famed Degas painting. And Emma Dobigny was one of Dega’s favourite models who seem to appear…..

Edgar Degas was born as Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, was a French artist famous for paintings, sculptures and drawings. Degar was born in Paris and he began to paint early in life.

An article published in the recent week in an online journal Scientific Report reveals that the long-puzzled-over image concealed behind Dega’s ‘Potrait of a woman’ is, in fact, a portrait of another woman. A powerful X-ray technique has unveiled a hidden portrait beneath the famed painting by French impressionist artist Edgar Degas, solving a mystery that stumped the art world for decades. Australian researchers believe she is Emma Dobigny, one of the painter’s favourite models.

Degas appeared to have originally given the woman pixie-like ears, but later reworked them to a more conventional shape. For nearly a century, experts have known that Degas painted the famed portrait over another image sometime between 1876 and 1880. As the painting aged, the faint outline of what appeared to be another woman began leaking through the top layers of paint.

So the gallery teamed up with scientists from Australian Synchrotron, who spent 33 hours painstakingly scanning the painting with a high-definition X-ray beam. The scan revealed not only to see the details of the entire hidden image, but its evolution, thereby solving the old mystery.

Ready to Track & Destroy

Recently the Indian Navy has joined a niche group of countries when it successfully test-fired a missile that can defend warships by destroying incoming projectiles at a distance. The missile was test-fired during naval exercises undertaken in the Arabian Sea on Dec 29 and Dec 30, 2015.

It is a joint effort and has been jointly developed by India and Israel. The Israel-made Multi-Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar can simultaneously track hundreds of airborne targets. The Long Range Surface to Air Missile or LR SAM has been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited.

Barak 8 (Hebrew word for lightning), also known as LR SAM is an Indian-Israeli surface-to-air missile, designed to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, UAVs, cruise missiles and combat jets out to a maximum range of 70 km, however reports suggest the range has been increased to a maximum range of 90 km. Both maritime and land-based versions of the system exist.

The missile was test-fired on the Western Seaboard by INS Kolkata in the Arabian Sea. It successfully intercepted an aerial at an extended range. The ministry of defence called the success, a major milestone. It said on Twitter – Quantum jump in air defence capability of Indian Navy.

The range of the surface-to-air Barak 8 missile is 70 km and the range of the in-built radar, capable of tracking hundreds of airborne targets is 250 km. The missile and radar arm ships with a capability to detect aerial threats, such as incoming missiles, planes and drones, and defend themselves. They have been fitted on the Kolkata Class Destroyers for now.

Barak 8 was jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), India’s Defence & Development Organisation (DRDO), Israel’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, Elta Systems and other companies. Bharat Dynamics Limited will produce the missiles.

The Story of Three War Heroes!

The three war heroes – Naib Subedar/Hon Captain Bana Singh, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, who exemplified raw courage, bravery and patriotism against all odds were awarded the Param Vir Chakra. They made the nation proud with their bravery and courage.

‘No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country; he won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.’

‘There are only three principals of warfare – audacity, audacity and audacity.’

These were the famous words by American World War II hero General George S Patton.

Bana Singh, Sanjay Kumar and Yogendra Yadav showed the audacity in different conflicts for India. Their courageous feats won them the country’s highest wartime gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra. They are also the only three surviving Indian soldiers to proudly wear that medal on their chests.

Bana Singh scripted his tale of valour on the icy heights of the Siachen glacier, the world’s highest and coldest battlefield; in 1987 when the Indian Army recaptured a crucial post from the Pakistanis in a daring assault. Sanjay Kumar and Yogendra Yadav are both Kargil heroes. Kumar crawled up a ridge alone amid a hail of bullets that tore his chest and forearm apart, inspiring his platoon to capture a vantage point, Area Flat Top. Yadav, too took several bullets in the battle to capture Tiger Hill, a turning point in the 1999 Kargil conflict.

Night of July 4, 1999 – A crack unit called the ‘Ghatak’ platoon of the 18 Grenadiers stealthy approached Tiger Hill from a cliff face. The vantage post was held by the Pakistanis. The odds are stacked against the Indian troops. Yogendra Yadav was part of a ‘Ghatak’ platoon (crack team) that was given the responsibility of capturing the critical Tiger Hill on June 3, 1999, during the Kargil war. The odds were against the Indian soldiers as they had to climb a cliff to launch the assault on the enemy. As the bullets came raining down, Yadav was hit in the shoulder and groin. A lesser man would have given up. But the 18 Grenadiers soldiers resolve to complete the mission never faltered. His platoon killed three Pakistani soldiers before recapturing the post, a turning point in the war.

Siachen hero

June 1987 – Pakistanis had set up Quaid post on Siachen. The dominating heights allowed them to fire at Indian posts. The Indian Army launched an operation to evict them. 8 Jakli was to do the honours. Leading a five-man army, Bana Singh launched a fierce assault on the Quaid post held by the Pakistan army in April 1987. They killed five Pakistani soldiers before reclaiming the post, which the Pakistanis had taken in the early 1980s. That post is now called the Bana post, named after the 8^th Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry man who retired as honorary captain. Dominating positions on the glacier gave the Indian Army a huge advantage over Pakistani posts located below. Pakistan had started claiming possession of the glacier in the early 1980s, allowing foreign mountaineering expedition’s access.

Ambush

On July 4, 1999 – ‘A’ company of 13 Jakrif was ordered to capture Area Flat Top in the Mushkoh valley, where Pakistanis are using artillery fire to disrupt Indian Army supply lines. Sanjay Kumar volunteered for the mission. Sanjay Kumar and his comrades were tasked with capturing Area Flat Top, a crucial feature held by the Pakistanis. Barely 150 meters from their objective, heavy machine gun fire from an enemy bunker halted their advance. Showing steely resolve, Kumar crawled up the ridge alone amid a hail of bullets that tore his chest and forearm apart. Bleeding heavily, he charged at the enemy bunker and killed three enemy soldiers. Inspired by his daredevilry, the rest of the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles platoon assaulted the feature and captured Area Flat Top.

The military usually awards the PVC posthumously. But Bana Singh, Sanjay Kumar and Yogendra Yadav, who received their medals on Independence Day in 1999, proved they were exceptions to the rule by returning from the jaws of death. This exemplifies their audacity. Such brave soldiers make the nation proud. And India salutes the brave men.

Truck drivers of India

Trucking in India is a world by itself. It is generally believed, within the truck community there is a quiet friction between drivers from the north and south India. One can barely see divers from north, mainly Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh or Rajasthan spend time or chit chat with those from Karnataka, Andhra, Kerala or Tamilnadu; may be its due to the cultural divide or a mutual suspicion. Most drivers speak or understand 2-3 languages. Dhabas or road-side hotels are the drivers’ favorite eating and resting spot. The Northern India state drivers are a bit loud and good eaters. The Southern Indian drivers are quiet and not very out-going. So you rarely see the North and South drivers mingle or the camaraderie one sees from the drivers of the same region.

As the trucks ply all over the country, even the remote corners, it is one of the best media or vehicle to advertise and spread social messages across the country. One of the most interesting aspects is the lines or messages painted on the back side of the truck. The most common is – Horn Please. Ok! Some lines are funny and some thought provoking like - Don't come too close, you might fall in love.

Harmony on the Sea!

It is like a floating city. The world’s biggest cruise ship Harmony of the Seas set sail on its maiden voyage to the UK from France recently. The Euro 1-billion, 16-deck ship is bigger than the Eiffel Tower and holds the record for being the widest cruise ship ever built; boasting a 6,360-passenger capacity. It’s been compared to a floating city with more than 2,500 state-rooms , 20 dinning venues, 23 swimming pools and a park with more than 10,000 plants and 50 trees. It’s a dream ship!

The world’s largest cruise ship, which is a third longer than the Titanic leaves port for the first time as it set sail from France to UK. Harmony of the Seas, which cost Euro 1-billion to build and weighs 227,000 tonnes is on it’s first-ever sea trial. The ship, which is nearly 330 foot longer than Titanic, has around 500 of its maximum 2,000 crew abroad for trial. For months, tourists have been allowed on board to wonder at the luxury interiors of the ship that has 16 decks. The cruise liner made in France and stretches to 1,187 feet, which means it’s 165 feet longer than the iconic Eiffel Tower.

MS Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship constructed by STX France at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France for Royal Caribbean International. With gross tonnage of 227,000 tonnes, she is the largest passenger ship in the world, surpassing her older sisters – MS Oasis of the Seas and MS Allure of the Seas by some 2000 tonnes, as well as 7.1 feet in length. The success of the first two Oasis-class ships led Royal Caribbean Cruises to order a third ship of the type in December 2012.

Harmony of the Seas was floated out on 19 June 2015, began her first sea trials on 10 March 2016 and was delivered to Royal Caribbean on 12 May 2016. After building time of 32 months, the ship first set sail on 15 May 2016 from the STX France docks in Saint-Nazaire, viewed by over 70,000 people. Her initial destination was Southampton, England, although the home port will be Barcelona, Spain.

The booking will soon start for tourists. For the inaugural season to commence on 7 June 2016, Harmony of the Seas will offer seven-night western Mediterranean cruises originating from Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia). At the end of the summer and autumn season (in late October), the ship will cross the Atlantic to United States, where she will offer seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruises from Port Everglades, Florida and Port Canaveral starting in November. It has 2,747 state-rooms of different types to accommodate 5,479 guests ranging from small interior rooms to larger rooms to suites, some are fitted with wall-mounted 80-inch screens, covering nearly the floor to ceiling, that display the ship’s environment as if through a large window, called ‘virtual balconies.’ These screens were first fitted on the Quantam class of cruise ships. A full 43 categories of state-rooms are offered, starting from a room of 180 square feet. Several types of suites are available, including the new Royal Class. The ship is divided into seven neighborhoods, including Central Park and Broad Walk like its Oasis class sisters.

The amenities include : Vitality Spa and a fitness centre, Splashway Bay and H2O Zone water park, three water slides called Perfect Storm, ten storey high Ultimate Abyss, a spiraling dry slide with two cylinders, 23 swimming pools with two Flow Rider surf simulators, Casino, 3D Movie theatre, Puzzle break: Escape the Rubicon, a high-tech live room escape game, for up to 12 players at a time, designed by Seattle-based Puzzle Break, in partnership with Hollywood set design company Show FX, 20 dining venues, the first double-storey Wonderland restaurant, 11,252 works of art, Studio B ice rink, The Aqua Theatre for diving shows and 3D flying shows with acrobats, the Bionic Bar where drinks will be made solely by two robotic arms, 1400 seat Royal theatre for Broadway-style shows such as Grease (musical), over 10,000 species of plants, including 50 trees in Central Park, Dream Works experience with characters from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, two rock climbing walls, full size basketball court, adventure ocean programs for children and youth and Voom, high-speed internet.
