The Monster Eye in the Sky!

From earlier times man was always curious to know about the stars in the sky. He tried various means from ordinary telescope to Hubble telescope to look at the sky and learn about the planets and stars very faraway from earth. And now are taking another giant step to peek at the sky…….

The construction of a gigantic telescope began in Hawai’s Mauna Kea peak, an area astronomers call one of the world’s best to search the stars. And India is part of the five country consortium that funds the project. It will be a major milestone in looking and searching the space for the unknown stars.

The Thirty Meter Telescope is a ground-based, mirror-reflecting that will offer the deepest and the sharpest views of our universe yet. TMT allows for sharper focus; as it’s large aperture collects more light and it can capture images of fainter objects.

The cost of the project is $1.47 billion (Rs 9,002 crore). It will be completed on 2025. The size of TMT’s main mirror is 30 meters – nearly one third the length of a football field. 492 mirror segments pieced together to form main mirror; will be aligned to stay at a millionth of an inch of each other. It will be 12 times sharper in resolution than the Hubble space telescope.

India along with the US, Canada, Japan and China form the TMT consortium. India’s contribution in kind – India will produce some high technology items the TMT project will use. Indian scientists will get 25-30 observing nights a year on the telescope. The success of this project will have a great impact on the knowledge of space and distant stars. The world will be able to understand space and stars better than what we know and understand them today.

‘The author’s language and emotion immediately drew me into this biography, which is set in a small town, goes to Mumbai and from there to Gulf and UAE in search of a better life. The book is the most heartrending account of his early years and thereafter, about how he overcame his problems and setbacks.’
