Something little about me! Something little about me: the highlights and the hurdles. As the title hints at growth, contrast, or a journey, it could also have been "The Architecture of My Days" or "Snapshots from My Journey." I lived all my life in Bombay, now Mumbai. I was educated and brought up in Mumbai. A couple of years ago the apartment where we lived for almost six decades went for redevelopment. I had three alternatives to shift residence—Navi Mumbai, Goa, and Mangalore. Why these three places? Navi Mumbai, simply because it’s better than Mumbai; Goa, because I have roots there from my father’s side and my wife is from Goa, and also nearby, I have Sawantwadi and Shiroda connections through my wife, and I visited Goa every year until covid; and Mangalore, because my mother hailed from there.

We had to make a choice from these three places. After some thought we picked Mangalore because it has the feel of both Goa and Navi Mumbai. Goa, for the coast, beaches, seafood, environment, and adventure; and Navi Mumbai, like the new city, Mangalore, is developing fast. It's listed as a smart city with an international airport, seaport, and good connections by rail, road, and air to all parts of India. This positive combination of both places, Goa and Navi Mumbai, made us choose Mangalore. It seems to be a good decision.

As the tedious redevelopment process was on and before vacating the flat, gave me an opportunity to plan and design a home. We constructed the house here to meet all our needs, requirements, and liking. It’s spacious and comfortable, with a provision for guests who can join us and spend some quality time in a nice, clean environment amidst nature, relish fresh vegetables and seafood, and visit tourist spots and other hotspots around the city. With malls, towers, buildings, restaurants, resorts and big brands, we don’t miss Mumbai much except for friends and relatives. With modern communication and quick travel, life is smooth.

I and my siblings studied in one of the best schools then, in the suburb of Mumbai. Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School for boys and St. Anthony’s Girls School in Chembur, managed by priests and nuns. In those days these were considered the next best after Don Bosco in Matunga, on the central side of Mumbai. Many celebrities have passed out from our school. My kids passed out from here too. We have many happy memories of the school days. Then after college developed an interest in advertising and communication. Soon it became my profession. Meanwhile, as a copywriter, I was introduced to creative writing, writing copy for advertisements, promos, and jingles. Apart from writing copy and poems, I developed an interest in serious writing. Soon I started writing short stories and articles on different subjects, and some of them got published in magazines and newspapers in India and abroad. This was an impetus to take it up seriously.

During this period, I wrote and published four books. A collection of my poems, an autobiography of a NRI businessman, edited a biography of an ex-govt official, and a book based on the Ramayana in English verse. The response was encouraging, which propelled me to concentrate on writing, including content writing.

After many years I had planned to slowly wind up the advertising business, as I was handling it alone. I wanted to relax but keep myself occupied with writing. And a blog, Aneela Nike Post, was born. I embarked on a personal writing journey through blogging, exploring a diverse range of subjects that sparked curiosity. The blog quickly gained a significant following in India and abroad, resonating with readers who appreciated the unique perspectives and engaging writing style. As many people inquire about the blog name, the blog name was derived from my name. Aneela from Anil and Nike from Naik and the big brand. Based on the phonetic sound of my name! Earlier, I wrote some current affairs articles under this pseudonym. It also has a confusing element, with some thinking the writer to be a female. Now Aneela Nike Post is a popular blog with readers in India and around the world.

Encouraged by the response, I curated a selection of the most popular and thought-provoking blogs into a book, offering readers a chance to experience my writing in a new format. And recently my fifth book, a collection of curated blogs over the years, was published into a book—From Posts to Pages. It’s available worldwide through Amazon, Kindle, and Flipkart. I am sure you will enjoy reading this too.

The other question often asked by my friends is, "Will you return to Mumbai soon?" I myself don’t know the answer. I visit Mumbai every 4-5 months on my travels to places from time to time. I stay in Mumbai for a week or more, meet friends, clear the pending work, and return back. Presently I am comfortable here after living and working in Mumbai for decades, away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city. By the way Mangalore is the only city with 7+ names!

Journey from Nayak to Naik!

What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet.

What's in a name? Plenty, especially in India! Where, how and why were the questions asked often. Over the years, many times, I have mentioned my name, I was asked, are you a Nayak or Naik? There is an interesting story or you can say, a comedy of error!

In the mid- forties my father landed in Mumbai just before the big dock explosion in Mumbai. He joined the then Imperial Tobacco Company. It was here the real gaffe occurred and made history! And we all became Naiks!

The Maharashtrian head clerk in the Admin and HR department wrote my father's surname as Naik in the register as Naik is a common Maharashtrian surname without realizing that it was Nayak. My dad didn't know or care about it as he was keener on the job. He realized the gaffe until much later. By then Nayak had already become Naik in all the records. It had funny and interesting repercussions.

In Mumbai, he was taken to be a Maharashtrian, they presumed he was from Konkan. Some thought he was from Karwar and some felt, he's from Goa. So far, it was fine. Then people from Orissa thought he was an Oriya as they too have Naik's. Some thought he's from Andhra as they too have a Naik surname. And among Mangalorean’s, they too felt he is a Mangalorean as there too you have Naik's.  It seemed like all were claiming him to be from their place.

I too faced the same Nayak or Naik gaffe as I grew up. It was fine till it was about the region. In some cases, people started asking, are you a Maratha among people from coastal Maharashtra, then I was asked by GSB's of Karwar, Goa and Mangalore, are you a Saraswat. Among the other Mangalorean’s, I was asked if I was a Naik similar to the Shetty’s. Once I was told by a guy, we have Naik in Banjaras too. The most amusing part was, I was once asked, are you a Catholic since as a Naik you speak good English! And the most shocking was, a guy asked if I was a Muslim from Konkan like Niaz Naik the then Pak foreign Minister.

And the most-funniest incident happened during my visit to UAE in 2012. In Dubai I was introduced to a young African either from Ghana or Uganda, I am not sure, working for an India company. We shook hands and he mentioned his name, and I told him, I am Naik. He looked at me in shock and said, lucky man you are from Nike family, you must be getting those expensive sports shoes free of cost! For a moment I didn’t understand, couldn’t comprehend what he said. Then I realized he was referring to Nike shoes. I told him, I am NAIK from India and not NIKE, have no connection. He had a hearty laugh. Some Keralites presumed I must be a Nair with a wrong k instead of r!

Fortunately, my children didn’t face much in Mumbai, since they speak fluent Marathi. People presume they’re from coastal Maharashtra, but sometimes asked, Naik from where? Now you know a simple clerical error of writing Nayak as Naik created undue interest and generated unwanted attention! If Shakespeare had lived now, he might be wondering, there's so much to a name in India! He would have taken back his line – What’s in a name!
